11 Nikolauskirche

The picture shows the Nikolauskirche before it was extended eastwards. Rosenheim’s population had doubled rapidly since connection to the railway in 1857. By 1880 it had grown from 3,400 inhabitants to 8,400, so greater interior church space was required. Before the church’s conversion could begin the building had to give way in the foreground, which served as the sexton house. The nave was then extended by three bays towards Ludwigsplatz. The new chancel and circumferential sacristy received their previous form again. A representative entrance from the square was also added. The church was furnished in the neo-Gothic style and celebrated its consecration on St. Nicholas Day in 1881.
